This superb and highly decorative Raj period Kashmir wear papier mâché handmade large elephant is incredibly well detailed in its decoration.

The elephant has been hand modelled in papier mâché and three dimensionally decorated throughout its body with classical scenes with numerous figures offering gifts to the Maharaja, who is seated on a large, important throne chair in an elaborate palace.

Around the central panels of decoration are multiple herds of deer. The elephant is very richly hand painted in bright colours, highlighted in gold.

This superb piece of large Kashmir art is in excellent original condition with no restoration or damage.
