George III Silver Meat Skewer, Eley & Fearn, 1803

Here we have a top quality, large George III Sterling Silver Meat Skewer. The skewer has a lozenge shaped cross section, typical of those from this period. There are two different crowns, one above the other, engraved just below the ring handle.
The meat skewer was made in London by renowned silversmiths William Eley and William Fearn and dates to 1803. William Eley registered his first mark at Goldsmiths Hall in 1778 and worked alone for nearly 20 years before forming a partnership with William Fearn in 1797. They were joined between 1808 and 1814 by William Chawner who then left to form Chawner & Co. William Eley died in 1824 and the family business was continued by his three sons.
Condition is very good, with no damage to the tip and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 220 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The skewer is 33.1cm / 13ins long and 2.9cm / 1.1ins across at its widest point. It weighs in at a substantial 115.7g / 4.08oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the skewer, are well struck and clear to read with just a little rubbing to the makers' mark. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crowned leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter H for 1803, the George III duty mark and the W E over W F makers' mark for William Eley and William Fearn.
Shipping in the UK is £12 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the skewer.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
