Princess & The Pea Silver Baby Spoon, Denmark 1935
This is a charming Early 20th Century Danish 826 Silver Baby Spoon. The spoon is plain with a broad stem and the finial is a scene from the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale The Princess And The Pea. There are no initials or personalisation and the spoon would be ideal as a Christening or New Baby gift.
The spoon was made in Horsens, Denmark by Horsens Sølvvarefabrik and assayed in Copenhagen in 1935. The firm was founded in the town of Horsens in Denmark in 1904 by brothers Winter and Sofus Sørensen. The successful company remained in the Sørensen family until it was bought by Cohr in 1984 and later by the Swedish manufacturer Gense. They are best known for their flatware, cutlery and tableware.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and just the minimal superficial surface wear that you would expect with the passage of time. It seems unlikely that this has seen much use and has instead been kept as a treasured gift and heirloom. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The spoon is 14.8cm / 5.8ins long and weighs in at a respectable 29.8g / 1.05oz of solid silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the stem, are nice and easy to read. They show the three towers Danish silver mark, showing it is a minimum of 826/1000 grade silver, above the number 35 showing it was made in 1935. There is the JS monogram for the Copenhagen assayer Johannes Siggaard (1932-60) and the HS monogram makers' mark for Horsens Sølvvarefabrik.
