Victorian Silver Cased KKA PRIV Inkwell, 1894

Here we have an intriguing Victorian Sterling Silver Cased Travelling Inkwell. The silver outer is cylindrical and decorated with floral swags. The interior is gilt brass with a flat topped dome over the inkwell which is released by a spring catch on the side.
The internal top of the inkwell is marked KKA PRIV around an anchor wrapped by a dolphin below a double headed imperial eagle. This stands for Kaiserlicher Koniglicher Adler Privileg, which translates as Imperial and Royal Eagle Privilege and is the mark used for items produced for the Austro-Hungarian Imperial Court. The addition of the anchor and dolphin shows that this was for use in the Austro-Hungarian Imperial Navy.
At some point in its life it has obviously made its way to England where it has been cased in Sterling Silver by highly regarded silversmiths Levi & Salaman in Birmingham and assayed in 1894. How or why it came from the Austro-Hungarian Empire to Victorian Britain we will never know.
The inkwell has definitely been used but overall condition is good with just a very small scrape on the lid and a little ding just below the hinge. The push button clasp at the front is a little stiff but working as is the spring clasp on the inside. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The inkwell stands 4cm / 1.5ins high and is 4.2cm / 1.6ins in diameter. It weighs in at 71.3g / 2.5oz.
The hallmarks, on the upper part of the body, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter u for 1894 and the L & S makers' mark for Levi & Salaman.
