Description

Splendid mid 19th.c. English brass fireside pail with lid c.1870. Probably originally intended for coal, it would also make a great container for the sticks, paper, firelighters etc needed to get a fire or log burner going. Of classical urn form with two large articulated handles, reeded decoration to the base and stood on three short legs with a scroll detail and block foot. Original lid of concentric stepped form rising to a large pointed pommel handle. With a patent mark, design number and a clear maker’s stamp for the Birmingham company William Soutter & Sons. Excellent condition.
