Description

Interesting painting in oil on canvas of a colonial family in Bulawayo (Zimbabwe). Standing before a traditionally built pole and dagga house are smartly dressed gentleman with his wife and son who shows off what must have been an expensive new bicycle. By poignant contrast a young local boy looks on barefooted and seated on a rock to the left of the canvas. Signed George Cartlidge Rudyard and dated 1922. Tucked in the rear of the stretcher is a hand written note identifying the family members and stating the location as 'outside their 'house' at the Northern Star Gold Mine (Consolidated Goldfields) Bulawayo about 1908' suggesting it may have been painted from an earlier photograph. Very good condition presented unframed on the original stretcher.
