Description

Large genre scene oil painting on canvas by the acclaimed Belgian artist Piet Verhaert (1852-1908) dated 1890. Titled L'Intrus (The Intruder) a pretty young woman at an open window talks to a confident young man in workers clothes and clogs leaning on the windowsill. Meanwhile keeping a weary eye on proceedings from the stable door stands a rather serious looking older woman. It seems she may well be right to be suspicious, note the grappling hook, rope and lantern by the man's feet! Clearly signed and dated 1890 in the lower left hand corner of the canvas. Presented in the original moulded and gilded frame with an inscribed and titled plaque to the bottom edge. L'Intrus (The Intruder) could refer to either the young man's intentions or the old woman's interruption of the young couple's conversation. Presented as found, some surface wear to the lower portion of the canvas and some missing portions of gesso to the frame. Otherwise very good condition.

Piet Verhaert was a versatile artist best known for historical genre paintings inspired by the great Spanish and Dutch painters of the 17th and 18th century. Indeed so enamoured was he of the period he was a member of the eccentric Van Beers Clique who would carouse through the streets of Antwerp in historical costume. He was also an original invited member of Les XX, a group of twenty Belgian artists who held annual exhibitions in Brussels between 1884-1893. Many of the great Post Impressionist artist of the period were invited exhibitors at Les XX exhibitions and The Red Vineyard, the only work sold by Vincent Van Gogh during his lifetime was sold at the 1890 exhibition.
Works by Verhaert are to found in the collection of the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp.
