Description

Superb oil on canvas painting of the steamship Seti by the well known maritime artist Parker Greenwood (1850-1904) dated 1902. Measuring 50" x 30". Showing the passenger steamship Seti under steam on the Mersey, together with the tugboat Hornby. In the background is the distinctive mass of Fort Perch Rock at New Brighton and the separate lighthouse which marks the mouth of the Mersey. Clearly signed in the lower right hand corner and dated 1902. Very well painted with lots of interesting detail. Both ships fly the red pennant with a white cross of the Moss Steamship Company. Note also the Ottoman flag (a white star and crescent against a red ground) flying from the foremast of the Seti. Named after an Egyptian god, she was operated by Moss as a passenger service to ports on the Mediterranean including Constantinople and Alexandria.
With obvious damage to the canvas in the sky above the foremast and a smaller area on the fort. Otherwise good condition. Presented unframed on the original stretcher.
Sold together with the painting are some notes on the history of the Seti and a letter dated 1985 from the then Keeper of Maritime History at Merseyside Maritime Museum regarding an offer to sell the painting which, though they are declining, she says 'appears to be a fine example of Parker Greenwoods work'.
