Description

Impressively proportioned oil painting on canvas of the medieval market in Ghent, after the original by the Belgian artist Felix de Vigne (1806-1862) c.1920. Very nearly seven feet in length. A busy market scene at the centre of which a finely dressed couple attended by their maids, page boys, a greyhound and a man dressed in red hooded tunic, discuss a length of cloth. Elsewhere in the market traders are selling armour, jewellery, toys, ceramics and glassware. In the background stand the famous pointed roofs and towers of Ghent's old city centre. Signed in the lower right hand corner 'd'apres F. De Vigne par A Verheughe'. Presented in a simple gold painted wooden frame. Good condition with just a very small hole by the suits of armour on the left hand side of the canvas.
The original Fair in Ghent in the Middle Ages, quite a lot smaller than this version, is in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts Ghent.
