1820's Georgian Staffordshire Oriental Slop Bowl

Description
#AD202:A beautiful old circa 1820's original slop bowl. It was made by one of the smaller Staffordshire pottery factories, possibly Hilditch & Sons. Most of the early pieces from Staffordshire made by the smaller factories are unmarked, such as this. It has 2 green over painted lines on the bottom that appear as the number 11. These are workmen tally marks often seen on early porcelain. This piece is unattributed. The Hilditch pottery family were in business in Lane End, Longton, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire from about 1822 to 1830 and made many wares similar to this.
This is a beautiful and bright early 19th c. piece in vibrant transfer reds with hand painted flowers in primary colors. These colors are reds, greens, a ruby purple tone, blue, and yellow. The center scene is a naive but lovely English Chinoiserie attempt to copy the extremely popular Chinese Export wares of the time. It features an oriental man and woman having a tea party! The gentleman holds a teapot on a tray and the woman extends her teacup to him.
A slop bowl is the 4th component of a traditional tea set. When the unused tea got cold, it was emptied into the slop bowl before again refilling the teapot with hot water. Many beautiful early slop bowls exist, and this is a wonderful original 200 year old piece made in Stafforshire England.
The condition is very good, with bright clean appearance as seen in scan. There are no chips or cracks. This tea bowl has a sturdy well designed pedestal base. It came out of a house in the Newton Abbot area of Devon, England. Click images to see condition in close up views and click again to open full images on screen for scrolling to right. A rare and beautiful Georgian Regency era piece that we were very happy to find in our travels.
