Description

#AD216:

This is a small English pottery children's mug, cup, or tiny coffee can in the Gaudy Welsh style. It is bright, clean and beautiful, and old. It has hand enameled 4 primary colour hand painted decoration with gilded highlights on the cobalt blue. There are no maker's marks, as most Gaudy is not marked. This little can is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or restoration. The color is strong and the feeling is clean and bright.

Gaudy Welsh is generally made by the Staffordshire potters, and used a mix of lustre, deep cobalt blues, gold gilding, yellows, orangey reds and greens, all in an early early Oriental Chinoiserie motif. This is in the height of the Chinese Export Pottery era, and was made in Staffordshire for the English and American masses. In England, a "Coffee Can" is the early and antique name for a straight sided cup shaped like a can. It is the precursor to our current large coffee mugs.

We took photos of this beautiful 170 year old can next to an English 1 pence, as well as putting the pence inside, to show the relative small, tiny size. A beautiful early piece found in Newton Abbot, Devon, England. Click images to see the condition in close up views. It is glossy and a stunning little old piece with much gaudy character..
