Description

A Stunning Gilt Bronze and Blue Sevres Panel Clock by H.P and Co c1870.
The stunning mercurial gilt case clock featuring the story of Palaimon. PALAIMON (Palaemon) was a child sea-god who, with his mother Leukothea (Leucothea), came to the aid of sailors in distress .
He was originally a mortal boy named Melikertes (Melicertes) whose parents incurred the wrath of Hera for fostering the young god Dionysos. His father was driven into a murderous rage by the goddess and Ino fled with Melikertes in her arms, leaping off the cliffs into the sea. The pair were transformed into sea-gods and renamed Palaimon and Leukothea. As you can see from the photos, the beautiful porcelain panels have the original makers marks on the reverse and this clock is numbered 2933. This number is repeated throughout the clock along with the Clockmaker’s stamp H.P and Co. this company retailing in Paris during the 19th century.
The fine French movement has been fully overhauled by me personally and has been polished using chalk. Although labour intensive this is a traditional method that brings a finish that simply cannot be replicated with modern cutting compounds.
