A Stunning 17th Century Burr Walnut Longcase Clock

Description
A Stunning 17th Century Burr Walnut Longcase Clock by Richard Colston c1690, This stunning 17th century burr walnut longcase clock with caddy top, 10” cast brass dial and a fine 5 knopped and finned pillar movement is nearly ready for sale once it has had a good test period. Made by made by Richard Colston of London (1682-1710). Richard was made free of the Clockmakers company by patrimony in 1682 having followed his clockmaking father into the business. There are a number of examples of his work including a curious 24 day clock at Battle Abbey, a fine watch in the Robert’s Collection with a pierced contrate wheel, another watch with sun and moon pointers listed in Britten’s and a fine burr walnut clock with 12” dial in the Wethersfield collection. The clock being of a smaller height than the later Queen Anne clocks with huge caddy tops gives the proportions of this clock a pleasing look. Standing at 223cm / 87” makes this clock suitable for most houses. The fine five pillar movement is secured by its original latches and has a very small recoil escape wheel along with internal count wheel striking. The case has had a very sympathetic restoration to stabilise the loose walnut veneer and carefully remove layers of dust, dirt and wax that had accumulated over a long period of time. The original shellac finish has now been revealed and gives this clock a patina that has taken over 320 years to achieve. The book matched burr walnut is simply stunning. After a thorough overhaul and careful polish using chalk, the moment is now ready for another good number of years service. Exquisite in manufacture, these early clockmakers put details into the lever work, wheels and arbors that are purely there for artist pleasure. The lifting lever on the front plate is pleasantly shaped with fine engraved lines and scroll, only another clockmaker would see this because it is hidden behind the dial.. the bullnose wheel collets hold hand made wheels with straight cut teeth that would have been finished again by hand. With over twenty years experience in restoring and conserving clocks and working on some of the finest and complicated clocks for a select group of the best antique clock dealers in the country.
