An absolutely sublime 8 bell, 16 hammer, four auto changing tune playing longcase clock by M Bradberry of Leyburn. This clock is simply magnificent if I don’t say so myself.. the perfect mahogany case with beautifully intricate inlay has clearly never been in direct sunlight and still retains its original colour and finish. With four painted spandrels depicting musicians playing various instruments, the 13” inch dial also has the tune selector in the arch. The tune automatically changes at 11pm every evening so that a new tune plays each day every three hours. This important clock is illustrated in Derek Roberts book “British Longcase Clocks” page 240 figure 371 A and B. Dating from before 1837 due the tune “God Save the King” the movement is simply incredible. The tune playing barrel is massive having been situated across the width of the clock and has 16 balanced hammers playing on 8 tuned bells. Mathew Bradberry is listed as being born in Leyburn in 1805, grandson of Robert Bradberry of Middleham also a clockmaker, he entered a clockmaking family having two other family members in the trade Robert Of Reeth in Swaledale (1770, Father) and Robert of Leyburn ( 1825, Brother). This family were clearly accomplished makers and produced clocks of the highest of standards.
