Dating from the last quarter of the 19th century this very rare 8 bell, quarter chiming bracket clock by Winterhalder and Hoffmiere has had a full overhaul in our workshop and is now on test. The original ebonised case was very dirty but complete and we have carefully removed the years of tobacco, dirt, dust and wax to reveal its original high polish finish. Although very labour intensive the result is simply marvellous.. 99% of W&H clocks have a series of one, two or four coiled gongs playing a Westminster tune. The Eight Bell Whittington tune model was incredibly rare when new and would have been a special order piece. The movement has been fully overhauled including handmade springs in our in-house fully equipped workshop and comes with a full three years guarantee for your peace of mind. The ornately gilt dial depicts the Egyptian myth of the sun god Ra and the serpent Apothis, the myth depicts a story of how the serpent would hide and wait to ambush the Sun god just before sunrise to prevent the sun from rising and this cause chaos. Above the clock is the Greek god Hermes, among other titles he is the protector of Travellers and Merchants. This links possibly to the predicted owners of this clock being not only wealthy enough to buy this clock from new but possibly Merchants.
