Description
A very very good and early George II Gainsborough armchair with provenance and believed to be by Giles Grendey (1693-1780)This handsome and superb quality English armchair made from the finest mahogany, fluidly carved, and dating from c. 1750. With leather upholstered padded serpentine back and serpentine seat, the arm rests with acanthus carved supports and knotted flower head to centres - both the ancanthus carving and knotted flower a rare motif which matches that used on the renowned Gibside Gainsborough Chairs (which were made by Grendey a decade earlier in c. 1740).
