Description
With a superb colour and of very fine quality, this beautiful George II figured walnut bureau is in very good original condition and of desirably small proportions. The walnut veneers beautifully matched and in superb condition throughout with crossbanding to top, side panels, fall and all of the drawers - a very high quality detail. The finely fitted waterfall interior of pigeon holes and drawers with a beautifully shaped architectural central door flanked by two secret pull out compartments. The original well, with walnut slide over, is large enough to store a laptop, keyboard, mouse etc and the inner drawers have the original very slender full oak drawer linings with tiny hand cut dovetails and.
The main bureau with two short over two long graduated drawers, again with original dovetailed full oak linings and original iron locks. The drawers open and close easily, have clean linings and are strong and solid with dovetailed joints. The brass handles are period but later replacements albeit they have been on this bureau for most of its life and no are as smooth as silk from centuries of use and polish.
The fall opens and closes with no warps or wobbles and rests firmly on the original small oak lopers. It retains its original lock and original hinges. There is a thin fillet of oak missing from the base of one of the internal drawers (but not affecting use) and a fine shrinkage crack in the centre of the fall which is ancient and not going anywhere and. It is so straight and fine that it is hard to notice as it looks as though it is part of the bookmatched design. Minor dings and small veneer repairs as is usual on such an early walnut piece but all very solid and stable and professionally done.
Made by hand in c. 1740, a really delightful George II walnut bureau of great charm and finesse with an excellent colour and of superior quality.
Heavy and in sturdy robust condition, entirely suitable for use.
