Description

A magnificent and extremely large oak chest - early 17th Century and later.

The two substantial oak drawers with circular with octagonal bollection mouldings inset with walnut panels. The shallow upper and deep lower drawers both oak lined with side rebated runners, large dovetailed joints and boarded nailed up bottoms.

The drawers flanked by two beautiful 17th Century herms and centred with a faux drawer over architectural arch concealing iron lock with large iron working key.

The pair of substantial and pegged fielded panelled and similarly moulded doors open on early iron butterfly hinges to a boarded fixed shelf.

The cupboard doors centred with a 17th century carved female figure, with concealed keyhole at her waist, iron lock and large old working key.

All with attractive turned walnut knob handles in original positions.

The internal and bottom boards in solid elm. Some evidence of old worm but long since treated and dead.

Made in two parts so that the upper case lifts off the base for transport as is usual and both upper and lower case with an oak framed fielded panel back.

The chest has been fully restored and refinished in the 19th century and now incorporates later elements, new internal runners and later glue blocks whilst maintaining its essentially 17th century form.

Very handsome and heavy and having a genuine "wow" factor, completely practical and usable.

Dimensions are:

46.5 inches wide, 24 inches deep and 49 inches high.

When separated for transport the lower case is 28.5 inches high and the upper case is 20.5 inches high.
