Description

This charming and completely original carriage warmer dates from c. 1800 and is beautifully shaped with elm panels forming the oval, interspersed with concave ebonised oak fillets and with a polished oak base and top. The top with heart shaped cut outs to allow the smoke to rise, and with original iron carry handle.

A reminder of how life was before electricity, plastic, television and the internet .... a time when most people earned their livings through the skill of their hands.

It embodies and demonstrates the care with which every day essential objects were made until just 200 years ago and the industrial revolution. People looked after every object, no matter how simple or ordinary, and lived in a world of little waste or disposability, with items treasured, re-used and passed through the generations
