Description

A lovely solid walnut armchair made by hand in c. 1680 with serpentine swept arms set on ball and spool turned supports which run continuously to form the turned front legs. Beautiful raked back legs with blocked feet and all united by very well turned offset H stretchers.

The chair frame is original with no later timbers including the small cupped front feet, peg jointed throughout with a lovely warm colour. Heavy and robust, there are some old worm holes to the stretchers and feet - long since dead - and a few small very old depletions, knocks and dings consistent with 350 years of caring use. Newly upholstered in a high quality heavyweight black velvet with a beautiful design of paired leopards, giraffes, monkeys, parrots and birds of paradise on a background of flora and fauna.

A very comfortable 17th century walnut chair with a gently raked padded back and deep and wide padded seat.

Highly recommended, this is an early chair of charming form, very comfortable indeed, and in lovely original condition.

From floor to seat is 16 inches, width between arms is 20.5 inches, depth of seat from front to back is 17 inches.
