William and Mary Walnut Cushion Framed Mirror

Description

It is rare to find such an early mirror with its original cresting – almost all cushion framed mirrors were made with these but over 350 years most have been long since lost.

This beautiful mirror has a thickly cut cushion shaped walnut frame with a burr walnut cresting over adzed oak backboards. The mirror plate is early and could be the original, it is extremely thick and heavy hand made glass with a typically soft greyish hue. There are some small dark freckles and the back boards appear undisturbed. The crest rail has a later oak brace retaining it in place – probably a late 18th century addition as this has been shaped by hand and is probably the principal reason the crest has remained with its mirror.

A very atmospheric and beautifully original early mirror, the walnut with a well developed rich and natural colour and in fine condition throughout with only minor bruises and a few small losses.

A lovely and rare example.
