Description
A very fine Queen Anne period English red walnut wingback armchair dating from c. 1705 with tall, elegant, slightly cabriole legs to the front terminating in high pad feet and raked legs to rear. The tall well padded camel humped back and scrolled outswept arms united by deep shapely wings and the walnut frame with a wonderful colour and rich patination. The chair is perfectly proportioned and of superior detailing and craftsmanship. It is extremely comfortable with a good deep and wide seat and has been newly re-upholstered in a red and antique gold thickly woven pure silk from The Gainsborough Silk Weaving Company in a design called ‘Cathay’. This fabric retails at £218 per meter plus VAT and is an exact copy of an early 18th century design found on a fabric fragment.
18th Century chairs were made bespoke – in a similar way to having a tailor made suit today – and each chair is not only individual and unique but its dimensions and quality provide information about the person for whom it was made. This chair has wonderfully balanced and carefully considered dimensions as shown by the measurements given below.
This chair is of superior quality and has many desirable and attractive elements - with its high stepped up camel back, wide shapely wings, scrolled arms and flanks. It is of generous yet elegant proportions and is a wonderfully comfortable armchair. One rear leg has some very old partial cracks which are completely stable, the seat rails are original and visible with some old losses and worm holes, long since dead. Frame is original under the fabric, very solid and firm with no creaks and loose joints
Just the chair for a evening in front of the fire with a good book, and a truly beautiful, comfortable and genuine early example dating from c. 1705
Dimensions are:
Width is 28 inches, depth is 28 inches and height is 49 inches.

I describe and photograph my pieces accurately and with the aim that on arrival each will exceed expectations.
