Description

A strikingly beautiful George II walnut dresser c. 1740 with a superb colour and lovely rich patina, the oversailing top with a featherbanded inset border and the three frieze drawers with matching inset featherbanded borders. The drawers retain completely original oak linings in strong, clean and sound condition. Of well balanced proportions, the dresser is of a desirably small and practical size with a finely shaped apron.

Made by hand and with finely bookmatched very thick walnut veneers, the dresser is of a attractively small size. Sturdy, usable and in very good original condition with a some small losses and ancient marks, some evidence of woodworm on the inner carcase (dead a long time ago). As with all period furniture, this has had small repairs and restorations during the course of its life.

The pierced brass handles are 18th century c. 1770-1780, and are of a Chippendale design. They are solid brass, very high quality and are early replacements for the original drop handles. They have been on the dresser for 250 years and have attractive natural wear from use and a lovely warm colour.

The cabriole legs terminate in wide trifid feet – a design usually seen in furniture of Irish origin – and the dresser may well be Irish.

A particularly lovely example.
