Description

A beautiful 17th century and later oak refectory dining table with original twin board top with mitred ends, beautiful carved apron over huge cup and cover carved legs.

The table originally had a box stretcher joining each foot and touching the ground but this has been removed, probably early 20th century, and an oak H shaped stretcher added to provide a central foot rest and allow the chairs to sit up to the table and push under when not in use.

Fabulous colour and patina, the apron of considerable girth and carved with S scrolls, foliage and pinwheels. Absolutely huge cup and cover legs in the Elizabethan manner. The frieze and leg timbers are all very old and appear contemporary with the huge boarded oak top. Marks, bumps and bruises, old stable cracks, some old worm and small losses, repairs and additions but in very good condition throughout, stable, peg jointed, extremely heavy and very robust. The top lifts off for transport.

Seats eight people easily and ten at a squeeze.

A wonderful, rare and very beautiful dining table.

Dimensions are:

84 inches long, 32 inches wide, 29.5 inches high.

23 inches from floor to lowest edge of apron. Planks which form the top are just under 2 inches deep.
