Description

A late Victorian wingback armchair with tapered legs and retaining the original brass casters and dating from c. 1890.

The chair of Gillows design with swept and rolled back top rail and rolled back arms.

The firm of Gillow & Co was founded by Robert Gillow in c. 1730 and continued until 1903 when it merged with Warings of Liverpool to become Waring and Gillow.

The Gillows name was a byword for quality and the superior quality of the cabinet work led to a number of designers asking Gillows to make their furniture.

The chair is newly and professionally upholstered in Fryetts Verona Rosa Azzuro fabric, of Art Nouveau design.

Extremely comfortable and well padded. The chair is sturdy, heavy and well made without any weak joints, repairs, worm or other issues and has been well cared for all of its life.

A beautiful well shaped antique chair in the manner of Gillow & Co., in excellent condition commensurate with age and use.
