Description

This high quality chair dates from c. 1740, made by hand from solid Cuban mahogany and superbly detailed with bold cabriole front legs united by an offset H stretcher and, at the hips, carved in the solid with expansive scallop shells and beautifully scrolled borders and terminating in substantial claw and ball feet. The arms very well carved with acanthus leaves.

The chair retains its original brass casters with oak wheels. It is heavy, robust and solid with no weakness, creaks or movement in the joints.

The chair has had a couple of professional repairs in its life but nothing noticeable or unpleasant or affecting its structure, it has minor bruises and knocks consistent with it long life.

This is a large, fine and very comfortable chair with a well padded seat. The back is also well padded with a gentle rake and it is very supportive. It has been upholstered relatively recently in a tapestry fabric, the design of which is based on an early English pattern. The upholstery is finished with antique brass nails.

This is a fabulous chair and a testament to its maker, 280 years after it was made it remains an entirely robust, beautiful and usable chair and the quality of its design, construction and carving really shine out.
