Description

With an excellent colour and very well developed patination, this beautiful walnut chair was made in the late 17th century by a provincial English craftsman. It is of solid walnut and carved with great exuberance, expression and fluidity. The softly curved horsebone legs with scrolled feet and elaborately carved stretchers incorporating early English motifs, now carved in three dimensions, of pinwheels, C scrolls and S scrolls.

The cane work is old but is in supple and sound condition with plenty of life in it. The chair with some repairs, marks, knocks and small losses consistent with age and caring use and reflected in our low price.

Particularly fine ring reel and bulb turnings to the legs and tall back supports and a very well carved cushion frame to the seat back with a high arching crest rail carved with S scrolls, fruit a flying pinwheel and foliage.

A thoroughly attractive early walnut English chair, usable, solid and robust, with a really fantastic colour.
