Description

A beautiful and unique set of six original Arts and Crafts yew, oak and fruitwood dining chairs of exceptional quality and dating from c. 1880.

Made by a skilled craftsman completely by hand in the traditional manner, with pegged joints and each with a superbly carved splat depicting scenes from the first books of the bible such as Genesis – Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden.

One with a hand carved inscription reflecting the words of Marcus Aurelius which reads ‘For Thee Mother, I made it for Thee’

Truly unique and in very condition for age with no worm and only minor marks and knocks consistent with age and very careful use. On three of the chairs a couple of additional blocks have been added beneath the drop in seat pads which are only visible when the seat pads are removed.

It is hard to imagine how many months the set of chairs took this craftsman to make, or indeed what they would cost to have made by hand today.

A wonderful, emotive set of chairs deserving of a place in a museum and yet sturdy, usable and very comfortable.

Of such quality that despite being used by generations they are are still as strong and solid as when made.

Substantial elaborate spandrels, well shaped top rails, drop bell husks which tumble down the front legs and rise at the bases of the arm supports to the carvers and running along the backs and top rails of each chair, again all carved by a very skilled hand

Each seat pad newly upholstered in a Versailles gold green soft velvet and the seats well padded and comfortable, the backs with a gentle comfortable rake.

An extraordinary and beautiful bespoke set of six chairs superbly made and joined and true to Arts and Crafts skill and tradition.
