Description

A fine original William and Mary English oak dresser c. 1690.

The twin boarded top with a moulded edge and canted frieze over two long twin panelled drawers with raised geometric mouldings and solid brass split pin handles. Each of the drawer panels and framed stiles are crossed with holly strings over quartered walnut oyster veneers.

The deep girdle moulding over the turned baluster blocked legs and turned feet united by chamfered and channel carved stretchers. Side panels are fielded and framed with moulded rails and stiles. Single planked back board.

Heavy and sturdy, entirely practical and usable. The drawer linings are elm with the sides rebated for the runners and large hand cut dovetails. The drawers open and close smoothly.

A few minor dings and marks and some shrinkage but overall the dresser is in showroom condition and has been fully and professionally restored in the early 20th Century. The handles are fitted in the original holes and there is no evidence of earlier handles.

A rare and beautiful quality example in excellent condition.
