Description

A fabulously small and pretty solid mahogany demi-lune table with double leaf hinged top which opens to a lovely round table with lockable workbox below. Perfect as a lamp table or candle stand and a comfortable height to have sitting alongside a sofa or armchair. The table is heavy and completely sturdy and can be used open or closed.

English and dating from around 1740, the table has developed a fantastic colour which our photographs do not do justice to and shows very skilled cabinet work with its long and slender legs, , finely tapered ankles and neat pad feet. The legs with shaped lappets to the tops, which is a rare and high quality detail.

The dimensions are given below and neatly demonstrate how important correct proportions were to the 18th Century cabinet makers – it was essential to have balance, elegance, the correct lines and exacting proportions. And the proportions of this table are, as you can see, exactly right and show that it was made by a skilled cabinet maker and there has been no later adaptation.

In truly excellent condition for age with only bruises and a couple of very small restorations around the hinge which are not noticeable or significant. Very well cared for all of its life.
