Rarest Pair of George I Gilt and Gesso Chairs

Description

This pair of gilt and gesso side chairs date from around 1720-1730. The baluster shaped splat finely cut with flowers and foliage on a pokerwork ground with central cartouche to the top rail. All elements are channel outlined and both chairs retain traces of original red decoration. The water gilded finish stable and in very attractive worn condition consistent with age and these chairs have clearly been very well cared for all of their lives. Some professional regilding and regessoing to exposed elements. No breaks, damage or replacement timbers. These chairs are heavy and robust and the frames are tight and sound.

The arms with fine scrolls, pokerwork and foliate engraving where they meet the back rail.

The cabriole legs to front and rear terminating in pad feet and with turned offset stretchers.

Beautiful double serpentine shaped seat rails all round and overstuffed seats covered in a sage green silk with embroidered silk flowers.

A very rare and beautiful pair of early Georgian chairs.

Dimensions are

Maximum width is 24 inches, height is 40 inches and depth is 19 inches.

Height for floor to seat is 18.5 inches.
