A Superb George I Pony Hoof Walnut Arm Chair

Description
A very fine and early walnut chair, c. 1720, with cabriole knees caved with scallop shells and drop bell husks over beautifully carved pony hoof front feet, with shepherd’s crook arms. The legs with raised hand carved border and small hocks at the back of the feet, really charming features in lovely original condition. The camel shaped back rail and unusual inverted breakfront seat rail are yet more higher quality features of this very good and rare arm chair.
Upholstered in an 18th/19th century hand sewn gross point tapestry in excellent condition with the colours still very vibrant. Depicting a battle scene, in the medieval taste, on a naturalistic background.
The chair has had some restoration including a small section of front seat rail (beneath the chair) which has had a support added and one foot has repairs - 19th century restoration and well executed. This would have been a much loved chair as it was no small expense to have this done and the chair is very solid, very original, and the condition is very good for age.
A beautiful and highly stylised chair of the period.
