Description

A particularly fine George II giltwood mirror c. 1750 in the manner of Thomas Chippendale with beautiful pierced scallop shell, opposing C scrolls and leafy sprays, all crowned with an asymmetric rocaille. The open flowerheads undercut with stems and roseleaf, the lower mouldings ornamented by frills and with hatching and cross hatching cut in the gesso.

The carvers initials 'P B' verso - which we are researching and will update here asap.

The carving is rich, refined and complex with dynamic sweeping movement.

The mirror plate original with lovely silver grey hue from age but still reflecting well and of a large and impressive size for this period.

A beautiful and elegant mirror which came to me privately and with some provenance. The frame a true work of art.

With replaced backboard, and a couple of old and small restorations to the gilding but primarily frame gilding and gesso are original throughout.

An absolutely stunning and early mirror.
