Description

A stunning beautifully carved wooden figure of a sage with a young boy and an ibis at his feet.
The boy appears to be holding a fish in his hand.The eyes and teeth of the figures look like they are set in glass.
The base has a floral design and is carved from a darker coloured wood.
The precision and detail of the carving is superb,c. 1900.

Probably one of the 8 immortals Shou Lao,more correctly referred to as lao Shou Xing,since Lao means old and Shou Xing is his nickname(real name Zhang Guo Lao),whose extra large head associates him not only with age but also wisdom and experience.He is particularly evidential of the Chinese reverence for old age that has resulted in many wonderful images of gnarled elderly women and men in both painted and carved forms.

It measures 6 1/4 inches(15.8cm) high with stand.

There are two tiny slithers on the back of the piece,apart from that the figure is perfect.
