Description

A rare Agnus Dei wax seal dated 1707 and blessed by Pope Clemens XI (1700-1721 Papa Clemens Undecimus).
The seal is mounted in exquisite silver thread filigree work and includes a small picture of Mary and the Christ child.
Agnus Dei seals were made from a paschal candle and blessed by the Pope after the Agnus Dei prayer. The seal is inscribed ' Ecce Agnus Dei qvi tollis peccata mundi' (Behold the Lamb of God who taketh away the sins of the world)
The filigree work would have been done by Nuns and is known as Klosterarbeit (cloisterwork). It was made around Salzburg. Klosterarbeit is difficult to find outside the antique shops of Innere Stadt, Vienna.
A beautiful and spiritual object. It is in excellent condition in it's original frame with hanging loop. The original glass panel of the frame can be retracted.
