Description

This tankard must have meant a lot to an owner a long time ago because its handle was in 3 pieces but they had it mended. It now has 8 staples in it and that's all that keeps it together. It dates to the early part of the 18th century and many were fitted with lids, perhaps to ward off the king's shilling. There is no evidence that this was so fitted but I have seen one with a pewter lid engraved with the owner's name and the date 1708 exactly similar. Apart from the handle, it is in very good condition, very little of the usual nibbles around the edges. I think it's probably Dutch, not English.
