A spectacular Georgian teak salt box

Description

A spectacular Georgian teak salt box. All probabilities lead to it originating in the 3 south west counties of Wales where teak from half way round the world often arrived when sailing vessels needing a little extra ballast would take it on and perhaps when loaded to leave Wales heavy enough not to need it. It was popular with local craftsmen as an economical bonus and a good deal of furniture and smaller items were produced. It leads to a little confusion. the products sometimes being thought Anglo-Indian. The salt box, candle box discussion rumbles on but the drawer under is much more likely to be for spice or herbs and there is blackening of the patina to one side. That leads to the likelihood that it lived near a smokey fire place to keep the contents dry, the last place to store tallow candles unless you wanted to melt them!
