Description:
This is a good quality antique mahogany 16-inch mahogany wall clock, incorporating a balance-lever spring mechanism, with a railway station design, circa 1935, which has been lovingly restored to its former glory and is now in good working order.
This mahogany wall clock boasts a beautiful light-brown colour mahogany case, with a moulded brass bezel and a hinged door to view the movement on the left-hand side of the clock.
This mahogany wall clock houses a single balance-lever spring movement, which would have been shipped over to India and then cased locally, in order to reduce shipping costs, at the time. A timepiece mechanism is not designed to chime or strike. The movement has been restored and serviced and is in good mechanical order, ensuring this clock is reliable and keeps good time.
A balance-lever movement removes the need for a pendulum, which is why these types of clocks were used on trains and boats, as the case will tolerate vibration and changes in angles and allow the clock to continue working. The clock comes with a key, which is used to wind the mechanism through the centre of the face dial.
The mahogany case has been cleaned and French polished (to light-brown finish), to revive the wonderful colour and patination of the grain in the timber. On the back of the clock is a bracket to attach the clock to the wall.
The mahogany wall clock incorporates a later tin dial, painted with black Arabic numbers, with an elegant shaped hour and minute hand. A hinged solid brass bezel houses the glass face that protects the tin dial and face whilst in operation. The brass bezel opens on a right-hand hinge to allow you to adjust or set the time. There is a catch to the back of the clock that locks the brass bezel in place and stops it from accidentally swinging open.
The railway design clock looks great in a variety of rooms from and also in either a traditional or contemporary setting. How the Clock Works:
This clock houses a spring driven timepiece mechanism, which incorporates a balance-lever platform escapement movement. It has a weighted wheel that rotates back and forth, being returned toward its centre position by a spiral torsion spring, known as the balance spring or hairspring. It is driven by the escapement, which transforms the rotating motion of the watch gear train into impulses delivered to the balance wheel.
These clocks were designed for travelling and were used where there was constant movement in the environment, such as on trains. The movement removes the need for a pendulum, which is why these types of clocks were used on trains and boats, as the case will tolerate vibration and changes in angles.
These movements are simple and quick to setup it does not require a pendulum to be attached and the clock set to the correct angle on the wall. Another advantage is that the clock does not need to be in “beat” to work.
To activate the mechanism, you need to gently rock the case from clockwise to anti-clockwise (similar to if you were turning the steering wheel of a car from left to right). This rocking motion should start the clock. If it does not start, repeat the process again until it starts (please ensure the clock is wound up first!). When you can hear a ticking noise (similar to a wrist watch), you know that the clock mechanism is now working.
Moving the vertical lever through the slit in the painted dial regulates the clock speed. Moving the lever to the left speeds up the clock. Moving the lever to the right slows the clock down (the dial is marked with an “F” for fast and “S” for slow). If you need to adjust the clock speed, you should use a small thin metal pole (e.g. a knitting needle or very small screwdriver) to gently place through the slit in the dial to move the horizontal lever from left to right. Please note, this lever is very sensitive and it only requires very small adjustments.

As we are confident that you will have no problems with the mechanism, we offer a 2-year UK warranty whereby if there were a mechanical problem with the clock, we would collect it free of charge from you, have it repaired and returned free of charge to you. We offer free delivery to mainland England, Wales, and Southern Scotland (anywhere south of Stirling). We do not offer free delivery to locations north of Stirling in Scotland, Northern Ireland, or any British Islands off the mainland for example, the Isle of Man, Isle of White and Channel Islands. Delivery times are usually 1-4 weeks depending on location we aim to deliver the majority of items within 2 weeks. All items are professionally packaged and fully insured in transit therefore, we can assure you, your items will be securely protected in transit and arrive safely with you.
Once you have purchased an item, we will contact you by email and/or telephone and provide you with a provisional delivery date, in order for you to confirm if it is suitable for you. Once you have confirmed you can accept delivery on the provisional delivery date, we will book the delivery in with our shippers and it then becomes a confirmed delivery date.
We will also provide you with our shippers' contact details, in case you need to contact the driver on the day of delivery. In order to be able to offer you free delivery, it is based on a 1-man delivery only. For any large items that require 2 people to lift the item, we ask that you are available at the time of delivery to be able to give our shipper a lift off the van and into your house with the item. If you are not able to lift items yourself, we ask that you have someone on hand at the time of delivery to assist our shipper with lifting the item.
UK 2-Year Warranty:
A 2-year warranty against mechanical failure is provided commencing from the date of delivery. This warranty does not cover accidental damage (i.e. dropping the clock). In the highly unlikely event there is mechanical failure, we will arrange to have the clock collected free of charge and returned to us for any repair that is required. Once the clock has been repaired, we will then return the clock to you free of charge. Most reasons for the clock stopping is due to the clock not being positioned correctly at the right angle on the wall. This can be easily corrected by re-positioning the angle of the clock to ensure that an even “tick-tock” noise can be heard from the pendulum. This warranty policy only applies to deliveries to the UK.
14-Day Free UK Returns & Refunds:
A 14-day free “no quibble” returns policy (from the date you receive the item) is available if you are not happy with this item. We will collect the item free of charge from you (we do not charge a return fee / collection fee). You will be given a full refund as long as the item is returned in the same condition. We will collect returns using our own specialist furniture delivery company. We will not accept returns via a courier service (due to experience of damaged items in transit).
