16th Century Oak Carved panel Harpies & Justice


A Early 16th century French oak panel depicting two mythical
winged like creatures and a central round wreath with a woman, the woman is justice holding her sword in her right hand & scales in her left, the mythical creatures are most probably Harpy or Harpies in this context,creatures with the head & breasts of a woman & torso of a beast or birdlike vulture. Harpies had a fearsome reputation, in Greek mythology it was known as the tormentor of misers, they would normally steal food and generally be up to allsorts
of dark & evil things. A possible meaning to this panel is of Good prevailing over evil.
