John Johnson:
Born in Leicester in 1732, he moved to London just before his thirtieth birthday and by the late 1760’s he was engaged with William Berners in developing an area measuring 655 ft long by 100 ft deep fronting on to Oxford Street, initially three streets to be named, Newman, Berners and Wells streets . Johnson remained to live in one of the houses that he had built in Berners Street, until he died in 1814. He was buried in St Martin's Church (now Leicester Cathedral) where he is commemorated on the base of a monument by his friend John Bacon, originally erected in 1786 as a memorial to Johnson’s parents
John Bacon:
Considered the most successful public sculptor in England and had been reckoned the founder of the ‘British School of sculpture’. Born in Southwark in 1740, at the age of fourteen he was apprenticed to Mr Crispe's Porcelain manufactory in Lambeth, London. Some ten years later he is recorded as a modeller at Wedgwood at the same time as he was producing models for the Chelsea-Derby factory. By 1769, (the same year of the book inscription), Bacon was working for the renown Eleanor Coade’s artificial stone manufactory.
In this same year he was awarded the first gold medal for sculpture awarded by the Royal Academy for bas-relief representing the escape of Aeneas and Anchsises from Troy.
By this time it’s apparent that Johnson and Bacon were working closely together on building projects, having completed many collaborations, later completing the emblematic figures, which represent Justice, Wisdom and Mercy for Johnson upon the County Hall of Essex in 1788.
This book represents the close network they had between themselves, a union between two of Englands finest talents and most notable Gentlemen of their time.
A specimen such as this warrants being in the museum, it is doubtful anything like this will ever be offered on the open market again.
