17th Century Bronze Mortar. London

An impressive 17th century bronze mortar which is solidly made and wonderfully heavy.
It is in good condition with a really beautiful surface patina. The bronze gleams with an almost silvery sheen. It has a pleasing waisted shape.
It is decorated with the 'griffin and key' pattern on two sides and is described in Michael Finlay's excellent book 'English decorated bronze mortars and their makers' (2010) p. 76 & p. 211.
It is believed that mortars of this sort were made by an unidentified foundry operating in the Lothbury area of London, close to Old Jewry, in the second half of the 17th century.
It has been argued that the 'griffin and key' pattern actually shows a swan, or a goose holding a Scottish bannock spade. Whatever the case may be, the presence of a torse (wreath) surrounding the motif indicates an heraldic origin.
Height 9cm (3.5ins)
Width 13cm (5ins) Each antique that I sell has been selected for it's quality, condition and visual appeal. Every item is researched to provide an accurate description, but you may feel that you want more information, or extra photos and that's fine - don't hesitate to contact me.
