1820's Play Fellow Cat Pink Lustre Sunderland Bowl
#AD065: English Pink Lustre Pottery
A wonderful 200 year old original antique British pottery pink lustreware Sunderland dish, saucer, plate or bowl depicting a child with her striped cat in a beautiful small round transferware vignette, the scene taking place in her English garden. It is 7.5 inches in diameter.
The luscious pink Georgian scene shows her playing with her beloved cat, who is tethered on a fancy ribbon, intent on a flying bird above. Her Georgian era fashion is impeccable. It is entitled in old font script below "The Play Fellow". There are also 2 light pink luster bands embellishing the outer rim, one thick and one thin with light rubbing marks, although the bands are both intact, see our first photo.
"Sunderland Lustreware" was made in the area of the Sunderland Potteries in north eastern England, about 250 miles NW of London. There are 16 identified potteries there, and more than half produced lustre. The pink lustre style is now simply called "Sunderland" in the antiques collecting world, although it is possible it may have been produced in Staffordshire or elsewhere. Unmarked pieces are most common in the 18th to early 19th c. period of pottery production, and it is almost impossible to delineate the specified makers.
This luster "play fellow" cat pattern can be found, although scarce, on children's tea sets, plates, bowls, cups, mugs and dinnerware in general. Condition is beautiful, with no chips, cracks, or repairs, however there are tiny firing marks and age crazing in the top gloss glaze, as seen in our photos.
