After WWII, the name Gaudy Welsh was first used by a group of avid collectors in America. It is an old pottery pattern which was primarily made in Staffordshire, England in the Victorian era, although it was made in Wales too. The English called it "Swansea Cottage." The colours of gaudy are cobalt blue, pink lustre, gold gilding, gild or gilt and red and orange. It is related to the early Imari Chinoiserie oriental patterns in the history of English pottery production

This is a beautiful old English pottery Gaudy Welsh jug with a high, ornate Victorian scroll handle. It's one of our favorites, and was found in Totnes, Devon, England. The condition is beautiful all around, with very slight rubbings on the handle tips, and overall crazing commensurate to its 180 year old age. It is unmarked, as they are.

The colours of this pitcher jug are reds, russet, pink lustre, light green, deep cobalt blue, and a lighter more pastel blue in the flower basket. A beautiful piece.
