A history of A Lange & Söhne
A. Lange & Söhne is a distinguished German watchmaking firm celebrated for its superior timepieces. Founded by Ferdinand Adolph Lange in 1845 in Glashütte, a quaint town in Saxony, the company played a crucial role in establishing Glashütte as a centre for precision watchmaking.
Initially, the firm specialised in producing pocket watches known for their outstanding craftsmanship and technical excellence. Lange pioneered innovative features, including the three-quarter plate, which enhanced movement stability. By the late 19th century, A. Lange & Söhne had earned global recognition for its exquisite pocket watches, sought after by the nobility and aristocracy.
The company faced setbacks during World War II and was nationalised during the socialist period in East Germany. However, in 1990, after Germany's reunification, Walter Lange, Ferdinand's great-grandson, revived the brand. Since then, A. Lange & Söhne has reclaimed its status as a leading watchmaker, offering both wristwatches and exclusive limited-edition pocket watches, while upholding its tradition of precision and luxury.
