18CT Gold English Pocket Watch, Merrill, c1836


A very nice, antique, William IV, English, 18CT Gold Pocket Watch made by Charles Merrill of Richmond and dating from c1836.
The 18CT Gold case is hallmarked with the maker's mark "JS", the "crown" above "18" for 18 carat gold, the Leopard's Head London town mark and date letter "A" for 1836/37.
The rear of the case has crisp, engine turned engraving and a circular, central cartouch with engraved initials.
The gold dial has the hours in Roman numerals and engine turned engraving to the to the outer chapter with decorative engraving to the centre. It is complete with a lovely pair of original hands.
The movement is signed by the maker "Merrill, Richmond" and has the serial number 168. It is key wound and set with the key provided.
Note the watch is wound and set from the front and the movement swings out to reveal the mechanism. The rear of the case does not open.
It measures 44mm in diameter. The weight is 67.2g
