18th C Oak Musket Chest chest coffer musket %%alt5%%
An unusually long oak chest until recently residing in a house on the Scottish borders. The family tradition has always always seen the chest referred to as the musket chest. The chest is original throughout, including all of the ironwork, save for the lock plates which have long since been removed. Measuring at 64 3/4" long, this is a substantial and heavy early oak chest. The oak, especially to the top, has a lovely colour and there are some nice little features. For example, at some point in its history someone has dripped a small amount of red sealing wax on the top. The dimensions would suggest it was intended for something long and thin, so perhaps muskets, perhaps swords or perhaps the family silver. It would have had - and indeed still does - a multitude of uses.

It is in good condition throughout - at some point someone has added a very thin oak strip to plug the gap between the boards in the lid. This is not visible from the outside to any real degree.

The ends have nice ornate original iron handles and unusual end hinges which stop the heavy lid falling back when open. These are a nice feature in themselves.

A substantial and original early oak chest in very good order.
