18th Century Italian Carved Pine Bust Of Saint
18th Century Italian Carved Pine Bust Of Saint Augustine
With orignal gilt and paint with the script Ora Pro Nobis Sant Agosti (Pray For Us Holy Augustine ) around the plinth base.
The construction is of a solid head and hollow chest,the plinth with moulded edge to the top and base.
Of good size it stands 24" high and the condition is good there are losses of paint and splits in the grain,but sturdy with good colour and patina a dry crusty back surface which is nice and shows this bust has been up against a cold wall and used as a devotional item ,the patina shows evidence of a lot of hands touching it.
Saint Augustine was bishop of Hippo Regius and a Latin philosopher and he is the patron saint of Brewers,printers and theologians and is honoured in San Pietro,Pavia ,Italy.
