18th Century Oak 8 day Longcase Clock Longcase Clock Oak %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
18th century longcase clock. Made of oak with walnut banding, the case is particularly attractive. It has the quality of cabinet-making normally seen on good mahogany antique furniture, with fine line and decorative inlays. Side columns, of walnut, have gilded brass capitals and base, and are finely cast. The bottom of the plinth has been replaced at some time, otherwise the case is in beautiful and original condition. It has the elegance of proportions that exemplifies the best Georgian antique furniture.
The 8 day brass movement sits behind an arched painted dial. The painted scenes, in exceptionally good condition, tells of time passing - at the top a boy flies a kite, below in the corners are a young couple, and at the bottom an older couple, all in pastoral settings.
Inscribed "Jn Dobie, Tanfield". A John Dobie is known to have worked in Tanfield, Gateshead, from about 1760 to about 1795. The dial has 2 painted dials on the face, one showing the date and the other counting the seconds. All hands are of cut steel. Circa 1780.
