18th Century Oil Portrait of King Henry VIII oil portrait painting 18th century %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
Oil Portrait of King Henry VIII (1491–1547) Following the Holbein Prototype, Wearing the Badge of the Order of the Garter – English School, Circa 1750
A refined Georgian antiquarian oil portrait depicting King Henry VIII after the celebrated Tudor prototype derived from the lost Whitehall Palace mural by Hans Holbein the Younger. Executed circa 1750, this cabinet-scale painting embodies the 18th-century revival of Tudor royal imagery and reflects the enduring influence of Holbein’s canonical representation of England’s most powerful Tudor monarch.
Medium & Support
Oil on single chamfered oak panel.
Panel dimensions: 15 cm x 15 cm.
This intimate mid-18th-century portrait presents Henry VIII in bust-length format within a painted feigned oval. The composition follows the widely disseminated 1561 version derived from Holbein’s now-lost 1537 Whitehall Palace mural, one of the most recognisable royal images in European portrait history.
Composition & Artistic Technique
Henry VIII is shown frontally with a composed sovereign gaze, reinforcing the authority associated with Tudor dynastic portraiture. The painted oval format creates a medallion-like presentation characteristic of Georgian cabinet pictures and antiquarian collections.
The painting displays qualities associated with mid-18th-century English antiquarian studio production, including:
Controlled linear facial modelling
Restrained tonal transitions
Precise costume detailing
Balanced contrast between warm costume tones and dark ground
The jewelled cap, feather plume, and Garter insignia are crisply articulated, while subtle highlights across the collar and ornaments enhance dimensionality. Age-consistent craquelure is present throughout the surface and supports the painting’s authenticity and period character.
The single chamfered oak panel is entirely consistent with Georgian cabinet picture construction.
Historical Context
Hans Holbein the Younger’s Whitehall mural established the definitive image of Henry VIII as a symbol of dynastic permanence and royal authority. Though the original mural was destroyed in the 1698 Whitehall Palace fire, engravings and painted copies ensured its survival within British visual culture.
During the Georgian period, Britain experienced a strong antiquarian fascination with Tudor history. Collectors acquired royal portraits for display in libraries, studies, country houses, and cabinets of curiosities. Engravers such as George Vertue played a central role in standardising Tudor royal iconography through print culture, directly influencing works such as the present example.
This painting represents not merely a likeness of Henry VIII, but an 18th-century act of historical remembrance and antiquarian scholarship.
The Sitter
Henry VIII (1491–1547), King of England from 1509 until 1547, remains one of the most significant monarchs in British history.
He was:
Founder of the Church of England
Central figure of the English Reformation
Architect of Tudor dynastic consolidation
The king is shown wearing a simplified representation of the badge of the Most Noble Order of the Garter, of which he served as Sovereign. In Georgian interpretations of Tudor portraiture, the complex original insignia was often reduced into a stylised jewelled roundel with pendant drop, precisely as seen here.
Artist Attribution
English School, mid-18th century.
Unsigned, as is typical for Georgian antiquarian cabinet portraits intended for collectors and scholarly interiors. The work demonstrates engraving-derived compositional fidelity and restrained historical interpretation characteristic of the English antiquarian movement.
Frame
Presented in its original 18th-century carved wooden gilt frame, contemporary to the panel.
The frame retains its original carved structure and has been later overpainted in gilt. Visible age-related wear, including surface cracking, gilt losses, chips, and historic repairs, is entirely consistent with authentic Georgian framing.

A compact Tudor cabinet portrait within an impressive Georgian architectural surround.
