18thC Dutch Calendar & Seaman’s Log Tobacco Box

A fine 18th century Dutch copper and brass seaman's tobacco box, sometimes referred to as a 'Dutchman's Log'. The design is ususally attributed to Pieter Holm (1685-1776), a Swedish sailor who ran a nautical college in Amsterdam.
The lid of the box is engraved with a perpetual calendar flanked by images of Julius Caesar and Pope Gregory VIII representing the Julian and Gregorian calendars respectively. The base is engraved with a chart used by sailors for calculating the speed of a ship along with an image of Amerigo Vespucci and an inscription in Dutch. The front of the box is engraved with 'Regt Door Zee', the name of the college founded by Pieter Holm in 1737.
Similar examples can be found in the collections of both The British Museum and the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich.
The box measures 17 x 5 x 4 cm and weighs 180 grams.
In good antique condition with no splits or dings, only surface wear commensurate with age and handling. Nice example. Currently shipping to UK and USA.
Free shipping to UK mainland on smaller items.
For larger items and overseas, please email for quote.
Preferred payment method is bank transfer. Paypal also accepted.
